Selective Service FAQ's

Selective Service Registration:

In accordance with Florida Statute 110.1128, the FSU application questionnaire for USPS, A&P, and Faculty positions poses the following question related to Selective Service Registration:

"Selective Service Question: [NOTE: If you are a Female; OR a Lawful non-immigrant on a visa (i.e. a foreign student, a tourist with unexpired Form I-94, or Border Crossing Document DSP-150); OR if you were born before January 1, 1960, select "Not Applicable". Documentation of exemption may be required.] If you are a Male who is or was required to register under the Selective Service Act, are you able to provide proof of Selective Service Registration? (Please select one answer only.) For more information, see the Selective Service System--Who Must Register chart at: https://www.sss.gov/Portals/0/PDFs/WhoMustRegisterChart.pdf, or call (850) 644-6034."

Q: I am a female—how do I answer the question above?
A: Selective Service Registration does not apply to females. You would select "Not Applicable".

Q: I am a male who was born before January 1, 1960—how do I answer the question above?
A: Per the Selective Service, "The requirement to register with Selective Service was reinstated in 1980, but only for men born January 1, 1960, or later." Therefore, if you were born on or before December 31, 1959, you would select "Not Applicable".

Q: I am a male who is lawfully in the United States on a Visa—how do I answer the question above?
A: Per the Selective Service, "Lawful non-immigrants on visas (e.g., diplomatic and consular personnel and families, foreign students, tourists with unexpired Form I-94, or Border Crossing Document DSP-150), are not required to register with Selective Service." If you fall into one of these categories, you would select "Not Applicable". Reference the, Selective Service, Who Must Register Chart for more information.

Q: I am a legal permanent resident—am I exempted from Selective Service registration?
A: Per the Selective Service, "The general rule is that if a male non-citizen takes up residency in the U.S. before his 26th birthday, he must register with Selective Service". For a more detailed list of which non-citizens must register, reference the Selective Service, Who Must Register Chart.

Q: I am a male born after December 31, 1959—how can I confirm that I registered for Selective Service?
A: If you were born on or after January 1, 1960, you can confirm if you are registered with the Selective Service by going to the following link and inputting your identifiers: https://www.sss.gov/Home/Verification.

Q: I am a male between the ages of 18 - 26, and I forgot to register for Selective Service when I turned 18—is it too late now?
A: Per the Selective Service, The law requires virtually all male U.S. citizens (regardless of where they live), and male immigrants residing in the U.S. (permanent residents), to register within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Therefore, to be in full compliance with the law, a man turning 18 is required to register during the period of time beginning 30 days before, until 30 days after his 18th birthday...a 60-day window. Late registrations are accepted, but not once a man reaches age 26." Q: I am a male who is 26 or older, I never registered with the Selective Service, and am not legally exempt from doing so. Am I eligible for employment?
A: Per the Selective Service, According to law, a man must register with Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday. Selective Service will accept late registrations but not after a man has reached age 26. Some men may have failed to register during the time they were eligible to do so and may now find they are ineligible for certain benefits."

What can you do if you are 26 or older and failed to register? Florida Statute requires state employees to comply with the Selective Service process. Selective Service indicates on their website that if you have failed to register, you have the following recourse available to you: Explain to the official handling your case the reasons for your failure to register with Selective Service. A non-registrant may not be denied any benefit if he can 'show by a preponderance of evidence' that his failure to register was not knowing and willful. Offer as much evidence supporting your case, and as much detail, as possible. The benefit agency official (FSU Human Resources) handling your case, not the Selective Service, will determine whether you have shown that your failure to register was not a knowing and willful failure to register."
