Essential Personnel Designation & Compensation Policy

DDDH

This message has been approved by Renisha Gibbs, Associate Vice President for Human Resources and Finance & Administration Chief of Staff, for distribution to all Deans, Directors, and Department Heads.

To ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff, the University may close for certain emergency events. Employees whose presence on campus is deemed necessary may be required to work before, during, or after a University closure. The Essential Personnel Designation & Compensation policy provides departments guidance on identifying and compensating essential personnel.

The policy separates essential employees into two categories: Essential Critical Personnel and Medium Priority Personnel. The Essential Critical Personnel designation supports critical functions that cannot be paused during closure and whose presence on campus is necessary to ensure the safety and security of the campus community. The Medium Priority Personnel designation will require an employee’s availability immediately before or after the imminent threat period to support functions of individual departments.

Employee designation may change based on the emergency but should occur before the University closure. Designations should be approved by the Dean, Director, or Department Head. Additionally, departments will be required to provide Human Resources information on employees designated as Essential Critical Personnel.

Nonexempt employees who perform work during a University emergency closure who are designated as Essential Critical Personnel will receive payment of one-and-half multiplied by their hourly rate.
